Description
The Eastern State Normal School “Echo” was a literary magazine published periodically during the school year. The students in the photograph all attended Eastern State Normal School during the fall term of 1900 according to the Catalogue & Circular for 1900/01.
The 1902/03 Catalogue & Circular lists David E. Dolloff, Nellie M. Douglass, Myra E. Eddy, William D. Hall, Emma D. Johnston, Benjamin H. Keller, Mildred D. Knowlton, Alice J. Lord, Grace D. Ludwick, Frank E. Poland and Wilda L. Vose in the graduating class of 1901; while Sadie F. Poole, Edwin S. Conner and Ruby I. Bickford are listed in the graduating class of 1902.
Conner graduated from Bates College in 1906 and worked as a principal and coach in Hallowell and in Cleveland, Ohio. He later earned a law degree. Frank E. Poland, in the center of the photo, founded Modomak Camp in Washington, Maine.
Eastern State Normal School began in Castine in 1867 as a training school for teachers. The school buildings became part of the Maine Maritime Academy complex.
